The Nature of It

In Georgette Unis’ The Nature of It, the title says it all. She finds strength in the company of trees, the renewal of natural cycles. Afternoon winds harmonize the unique /timbres of lodgepole and Jeffrey pines/…each a member of an ancient choir. She finds quiet moments of communion. Thoughts flit as birds branch to branch. She explores the lives of loved ones, friends, neighbors, pets, and other animals from the inside, always gentle, non-judgmental and personal. In an emergency room, a bedside or at home, dealing with the displaced, the infirm, even the departed, Unis struggles to come to terms with life and with death. Time and again, she turns to the outside world, to the flowers and dawns, to the deserts and dusks, to anchor her understandings. I yearn for a sacred mother/ to wrap her cloak around us. Her painter’s eye, her sense of color and shadow in subtle transition, inform these meditations and form them into wonder-filled poems.

She is an artist advising young painters, a keen observer of the natural world, mankind, and sensitive to the difficulties of life, confronting the unexpected in her new role as a caretaker, described so well in “The Cedar Fence.” She shares the experience with her brother and his devastating ski accident. And she asks us to partake in “silence to honor the mystery of one being birthing another.”
